The Tour de Brière is an unforgettable 3-day walk, ideal for nature-lovers, keen photographers and walkers in search of relaxation. Along the way, you'll be able to admire the traditional thatched-roof houses that are emblematic of the region and form part of the rich local heritage. You can choose to follow this route on foot, by bike or on horseback, depending on your preference. You'll often pass along the many canals of the Brière marshes, which are still used as waterways by the locals aboard their chalands, the traditional boats that are an integral part of the local landscape.
The long-distance footpath gives you an uninterrupted view of the Brière marshes and its different moods according to the season. In September, when the reeds start to turn golden, or in May, when nature is in full bloom, the Tour de Brière will surprise you with its diversity of flora and fauna. Although this walk requires some hiking experience, it promises to be a unique experience. To ensure your adventure is a success, make sure you're in good physical condition, have suitable equipment and book accommodation in advance.
So don't hesitate, put on your hiking boots and set off to discover the exceptional natural environment of the Brière marshes!
⚠️ Some sections of the route are no longer practicable for safety reasons, notably due to ageing structures or defective footpaths. In 2026, Saint-Nazaire Agglo will be launching work to rehabilitate the GR de Pays. Until this work is completed, we strongly advise you to follow the new route by downloading the new .gpx trace available below. ⚠️
