Inaugurated in 1926, the American Monument, also known as the Sammy or even the "Soldier of Liberty", commemorates the arrival of American troops in Saint-Nazaire from 1917 onwards. Destroyed by the German occupiers in 1941, the monument was rebuilt identically in 1989, thanks to a Franco-American subscription.

The monumental statue that adorns the Saint-Nazaire seafront was made possible by the Saint-Nazaire Association of Base Section 1 in New York, and is the work of the American artist Gertrude V. Whitney (1875 - 1942).
To mark the centenary of the American landings in 1917, a replica of the Sammy was built by students at the Lycée Brossaud-Blancho. It was inaugurated in November 2019 on the banks of the Bois-Joalland.
