LE HÉRON (La Posture du Héron)

  • Walks and hikes
44410 La Chapelle-des-Marais

Description

This 13.5km loop is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful walks to be discovered in the Brière and can be completed on foot in around 3? hours.
Starting point: Media Centre, Rue de Penlys. Please note: roadworks are expected along the route during the summer of 2026. The route starts in the village centre of La Chapelle-des-Marais and takes you along the ‘Heron Trail’! Following this route, you’ll be able to spot the many birds that nest in the Brière Regional Nature Park, as well as discover five communal bread ovens. The route also takes you across some of the islands in the Brière Regional Nature Park via the Québitre bridge. We recommend setting off early to enjoy the mysterious atmosphere of the Brière marshes, where land meets water. As the dew evaporates and the sun rises, you’ll be struck by the vastness of the landscape and the tranquillity that reigns there. You’ll also be able to admire the peat and the ‘morta’, two features of the marsh that have been used by the locals for many years. During this walk, you’ll pass through a few hamlets with thatched-roof cottages typical of the Brière. You’ll thus immerse yourself in the history of this magnificent marsh, which for a long time remained a secret, known only to the people of Brière. The Heron Trail is an unmissable walk in the Brière Regional Nature Park, allowing you to discover the richness and diversity of this magnificent, unspoilt area. Things to see along the way: • the marshland’s landscapes, flora and fauna • the Québitre bridge • the vernacular heritage: rogation crosses, wells and bread ovens (see fact sheet 25) • the port of Les Fossés Blancs, the starting point for barge trips • the Bosse Martenne pit
